Smart Glasses – Keeping Our School Community Safe

Parents and carers will recently have received a letter from our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Miss Casey, explaining the school’s approach to the use of smart glasses on the school site. Smart glasses, such as Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, look like ordinary spectacles but can include built-in cameras, microphones and internet connectivity. They are capable of taking photographs, recording video, and even live-streaming without it always being obvious to those around them.

While this technology offers many exciting possibilities, it also presents significant safeguarding, privacy and data protection concerns in a school environment. The use of smart glasses could result in images or videos being captured without consent or sensitive information about pupils, staff or visitors being shared unintentionally.

To help keep everyone safe and protect the privacy of our whole school community, smart glasses are not permitted on the school site. This applies to pupils, parents and carers, visitors and staff.

If smart glasses are brought onto site, they must be removed before entering the school and stored away until they can be taken home.
Thank you for your continued support as we respond responsibly to emerging technologies while ensuring Pinewood School remains a safe, secure and respectful environment for everyone.

If you have any questions about this guidance, please contact Miss Casey, Designated Safeguarding Lead, at l.casey@pinewood.herts.sch.uk.
